Sex and Rage: Advice to Young Ladies Eager for a Good Time: A Novel by Eve Babitz

Babitz navigates the sandy beaches of Southern California and the busy sidewalks of New York through the eyes of Los Angeles native Jacaranda Leven. Naive Jacaranda, who is wildly undisturbed by social norms, is swept into a circle of social-climbing visitors from New York in her early 20s, leading her on a voyage to “self-discovery.”

While Jacaranda’s feelings were extremely relatable, especially those surrounding not fitting in or feeling unworthy when spending time with a certain group, she came off somewhat cold at times, as if she was withholding her true self from not only those around her, but the reader as well. Although we truly get to know Jacaranda in her early 20s, the novel is, in a way, a coming-of-age story. By the end, Jacaranda is left in a happy state, with a lot of life working in her favor. Overall, the most enjoyable part of the novel was the relatability Jacaranda through the ups and the downs of her twenties. Easily, I found myself filling Jacaranda’s shoes, comparing war stories of my own experiences to her tribulations.
